When you die, a penalty is paid.

First, a gold cost is assigned for your death based on your current EXP. This cost starts out at a negligible 100 gold at the lowest levels, but rapidly scales up to a maximum of 100,000 gold by level 54.

After this death cost has been assigned, up to half of the Gold in your wallet is utilized to attempt to pay off the death cost. If this amount covers the entire death cost, then none of the following steps occur.

After gold has been paid, an item from your inventory which has a value less than your remaining death cost, but which is not among your three most valuable, is randomly picked to be dropped. If an item is dropped this way, its full value is deducted from your death cost. If the picked item is actually a curse, then 5,000 gold is instead added to your death cost and the curse is removed. This item loss process then repeats up to three additional times depending on how full your inventory was.

Finally, after items have been lost, any remaining death cost is paid by losing EXP.
